A beautifully scented candle is a de-light-ful way (see what we did there?) to set the mood, freshen up the home, and help us relax. But are you using your candles in a way that prolongs their ‘lifespan’?

To keep them looking and working the best they can, here are some quick tips to help you care for your scented candles.

Start right

When lighting for the first time, try to set aside a couple of hours to allow the candle to burn until the wax melts from edge to edge of the jar. This will help prevent tunnelling and create an even burn. Interestingly, wax has a memory, and if it is not allowed to melt across the entire surface especially during the first burn, it will create a ‘memory ring’ and continue to tunnel for the rest of the candle’s ‘life’.

Trim the wick

Trimming the wick can promote an even burn and steady flame. It also limits sooting or mushrooming of wick. Before lighting the candle, trim the wick to about 6mm and remove any wick debris.

Snuff the candle

Although many of us do it, it is actually not recommended to blow out a candle, as the liquid wax may splatter. The wick may also drift offcentre, or continue to glow and emit smoke. It is better to use a candle snuffer to put out the fire safely.

Avoid drafts

Besides the fact that candles burn best in still air, drafts can cause uneven burning, smoking, decreased burn time and weaker scent throw. Drafts may also blow the candle flame out of the jar, which could potentially be a hazard.

Watch where you put it

Never burn candles near heat sources or anything flammable, and keep them away from upholstery, curtains, rugs or papers. Also ensure that the candle is not put on an unsteady surface, or near an edge where it could fall over.

Keep away from sunlight

Candles, especially ones that are made of soy, are sensitive to temperature and light. You can keep your candles from fading, cracking and melting by storing your candles away from direct sunlight and other harsh light sources like fluorescent light and spotlight.

Other candle tips and safety

  • Put out a candle if it smokes or flickers, or if the flame becomes too high. These are signs that the candle is not burning properly and the flame is not controlled.
  • Always ensure there are no wick trimmings and debris in the wax pool.
  • Do not burn the candle for more than four hours, or longer than the manufacturer recommends.
  • Don’t wait too long before using your candle. Storing candles for too long may affect the scent.
  • Protect surfaces from heat and wax by using a candle plate.
  • Always burn candles in glass that is specifically designed for candles, as these are made to withstand the temperature changes that occur when burning a candle. Do not use everyday glassware.
  • Keep burning candles out of reach of children and pets.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Candles must not be used as night light.
  • Never throw candles in the bin immediately after using them.
  • Discontinue use of a candle when there is half an inch or 10mm of wax remaining at the bottom of the jar.
